Audition Tips

Here are the answers to several frequently asked questions about Sky Performing Arts auditions:

In most cases, memorize and present a brief (i.e., 30 seconds) monolog in the general mood of the play for which you're auditioning. Please do not audition with material you've written yourself. Don't apologize for not having enough time to prepare--just do your stuff as best you can.

Do not wear a costume, as that can limit your chances to be considered for more than one role, or even conflict with the director's vision for a specific role and limit your ability to be seen in more than one light. However, you can dress in a manner that might be faintly reminiscent of the period/location of a particular play.. In other words, don't wear a mini-skirt if the show is set in the 1890's, etc.

For musicals, if a song of the director's choice is required, memorize it and be ready to sing it with accompaniment. In the event you are requested to choose your own song, pick one verse of a song which shows off your singing abilities, memorize it, and sing it with accompaniment. Don't try it a capella. If you bring sheet music, make sure it is clearly marked so you don't have to stand there and explain what you're singing to the accompanist. If you bring a tape/CD to sing along with, make sure it is cued up to your starting point before it's your turn to audition.

If you can dance, it is always helpful if you can come prepared to show what you can do. Put your best dance steps in to a routine no longer than 30 seconds. Make sure your tape/CD is cued to your starting spot so the director doesn't have to hold up proceedings by waiting for you to find your music. Make sure you warm up before auditioning, & wear clothes (& shoes!) that are appropriate for movement.

Most helpful hint of all--speak up, and speak clearly.
