"Real Women Have Curves" by Josefina Lopez “Real Women Have Curves,” a play by Josefina Lopez, explores the relationships of five Latina women who work together in a cramped dress factory during September of 1987, in East Los Angeles. Through them, we share the story of Ana, a recent high school graduate who dreams of leaving the barrio and becoming a famous writer. The play celebrates the physical beauty of full-figured women, the pride of multi-generational families, and the powerful bond created when hard-working women labor together for a common purpose. The dialogue is poignant and powerful, funny and moving, and has been described as a post card for the Latina immigrant experience. In presenting this highly acclaimed show, Sky Performing Arts seeks to expand the boundaries of traditional community theater to include voices from a growing segment of what is our ever- evolving community. Whether you don’t speak a word of Spanish or your English is a little shaky, you will be utterly captivated by this story. The play is directed by Cyndi Thomsen and runs weekends beginning February 26 through March 14th at the Sky Valley Education Center, 17072 Tye Street, Monroe. |
From the Producers' Notes Why this Play? Why now? In order to answer that, we need to answer the question, "What does it mean to be a community theater?" Sky Performing Arts believes that it is not enough just to put on plays for the community or just to entertain the community. We believe that we must involve and serve the community. And how can we do that when we neglect a significant and growing segment of or our population? Sky Performing Arts has been looking for a couple of years for a Latino play which was within our capabilities and would reach out and speak to our Spanish-speaking friends and neighbors as well as the community at large. In a casual conversation with one of our youthful actors, who is now grown and graduated from college, she mentioned that she was taking a course in Latino Theater at the UW Bothell campus. She said they were reading a great play called, "Real Women Have Curves" and in talking with her, it seemed that this might be just the right fit for our initial foray into these new waters. Angi Simon contacted the playwright, Josefina Lopez, and the UW Bothell instructor, Jeanette Sanchez, and was greeted with excitement and encouragement for this project. After reading the play, the Board decided that now was the time and this was the show. |
